So you’re done with school/work/internships for the Spring and you want to do nothing but sleep until August. Be careful though, studies show up to 50% of the knowledge you gain during the school year can be lost during the summer. So how do you avoid this loss? How do you stay motivated and avoid the Summer Slump?
-
Grab a good book: Don’t read because you have to, read because you enjoy the story. Anything from Harry Potter to Game of Thrones to whatever you find interesting can help your brain retain knowledge as well as think critically.
-
Use technology: We’re surrounded by smartphones, tablets, and computers everywhere we go – why not put them to good use? Learn a new subject using Khan Academy, watch a TED Talk to become inspired, or go on YouTube just to find something you find interesting (examples: Minute Physics and CrashCourse). Whatever you do on the internet, use it to to help expand your mind.
-
Get into a routine: Waking up at the same time everyday helps your brain to prepare for the day. Exercising helps release endorphins which not only make you feel good, they help retain memories. Healthy body = healthy mind.
-
Enjoy your summer: Whether you landed an awesome internship, decided to study abroad, or are spending quality time with your family, make sure you take the time to simply close off your brain and relax. Whether that is done by going to the park, visiting the beach, or sitting at home binge-watching Netflix, take time to unwind and de-stress. You deserve it!
Sincerely,
